IUFRO World Congress
The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) is a non-profit, non-governmental international network of forest scientists that promotes global cooperation in forest-related research and enhances the understanding of the ecological, economic and social aspects of forests and trees. The IUFRO World Congress, held at 4- to 5-year intervals, is one of the much anticipated global forest events where scientists and stakeholders from all corners of the world gather to discuss scientific and technical issues related to priority areas of forest research, policy and management. Historically, the first IUFRO World Congress took place in Austria, 1893. More than a century later, the International Council had voted to invite the Republic of Korea, Seoul, to host the XXIII Congress which is to be held from 23-28 August 2010 in COEX Mall, Seoul. The host organization is Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI). Founded in 1922, KFRI is the sole national institute which carries out comprehensive research on forests, forestry and forest products.
Congress Logo
The Congress logo symbolizes the Earth composed of trees, forests, mountains, and the waters in harmony, incorporating the Congress theme "Forests for the Future: Sustaining Society and the Environment." In oriental philosophy, the earth is made of five elements that are represented in the Congress logo with different colors: metal (white), blue (wood), water (purple), fire (red) and earth (yellow). The logo illustrates the philosophy of conservation and sustainable management of the global forests in accordance with the natural law.
Congress Program
The Congress features plenary sessions where renowned experts are invited to deliver their keynote presentations each morning. Sub-plenary sessions will address more of the nine Congress themes which include current forestry issues on climate change, conservation, technologies and forest-dependent communities. Meanwhile, over 150 technical sessions along with poster sessions are expected to feature the latest advances in forest science. A trade exhibition will also take place parallel to the Congress offering a great opportunity for exhibitors to showcase their products, services and achievements. Prior to the Congress, training workshops are offered to scientists from developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to enhance participants with the latest knowledge in topics of regional and global significance besides fostering research capacities in these countries.
